Trevor Weidner’s journey began in residential collections and has evolved to supervising a team of meter readers in Columbus, Ohio. His progression culminated recently with his completion of ACRT Services’ annual Honor’s Program, aimed at developing leadership skills.
“Management skills are something I’m continually learning. Listening to company executives discuss managing multiple tasks and problem-solving deeply resonated with me. Learning from leaders who began in entry-level positions and advanced through hard work and continuous learning was truly inspiring,” shared Weidner.
He started in one of the more difficult positions at Bermex. Collections isn’t an easy job because it often involves conversations with residents who are behind on their bills and can require gas to be shut off. When Weidner wasn’t working on collection routes, he was gaining experience completing services including leak inspections and theft investigations. It was during a time of management changes that Weidner advanced to team leader. Without good leadership, they were experiencing penalties from the utility. Weidner, along with team leaders Kim Tripplett, and Dawn Stackhouse stepped up to take over a supervisor’s work. As a team, they were able to make a reduction in skips by 50% in less than two months and reduced penalties by 94%. Their teamwork, feedback, and coaching resulted in all three receiving the company Going the Extra Mile (G.E.M.) Award.
Weidner continued as team lead until he was promoted to supervisor in 2023. He appreciates the support and experience his manager David Mills shares with him. Weidner also attributes his success to Kim Tripplet calling the two of them the dynamic duo. “She’s been with the company 27 years, and I don’t think anyone works harder than Kim.” His team includes 20 people who read residential and commercial routes. Weidner also has two teams that do the difficult work of reading from vaults in the ground. On the team are readers who still do foot routes walking as much as 10 miles a day in all kinds of weather.
It is important to Weidner that he makes sure his work is getting done and that he sets his team up for success.
