Inaugural Hammer of Honor Recipient: Andrea Hawco

This year’s Managers’ Summit brought together representatives from ACRT Services and all four of our operating companies (Bermex, ACRT, ACRT Pacific, and EnviroScience) at Deer Creek State Park in Mt. Sterling, Ohio.

During the Summit, managers from each company had the opportunity to recognize their peers as the top manager of the year with the Hammer of Honor. Each hammer was hand-crafted by ACRT Services CEO Mike Weidner himself.

The Hammer of Honor is awarded to the operations leader who has hammered home their leadership skills, nailed teamwork, chiseled out innovative solutions, and consistently built a sturdy foundation of success. They must be a true master of the craft, demonstrating their ability to drive results and nail every aspect of their role with precision and impact. The winner is the one who truly struck the right chord with their peers, forging success through their outstanding qualities, and dedication.

Learn more about Andrea Hawco, an operations manager, who was named the inaugural Bermex Hammer of Honor recipient.

Tell us about yourself.
I am originally from Newfoundland, Canada. I moved to the United States in 2001 to build a career and it has been an exciting journey. My ideal day is kayaking a river, taking a long hike, or grilling something fun. Toes in the sand are not a bad option, either! And of course, there is my sidekick Lucy – my seven-pound Shorkie (a cross between the Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier), who you’ll find always by my side.

How do you feel about being selected as the inaugural Bermex Hammer of Honor recipient?
Humbled – I have worked hard this year to learn the business and pour everything I have into it. With that, I found a tremendous sense of passion that this was my calling. I leaned in a lot to others to ask for guidance and certainly know I still have so much more to learn. But to know that I work for a company that celebrates your hard work fuels me even more. I am grateful for the relationships I have built with my peers and others around the organization and to know they supported me gives me a great sense of pride – that I do work for the best company.

What is your management style/philosophy?
I like to empower people. I think throughout my career I’ve dealt with so many different teams that it has given me the experience to guide and the wisdom to teach. I don’t like to micromanage however feel my best management is when I can come alongside someone who is willing to learn and support them. I feel very passionate about people and processes. Both are important to success – you cannot have one without the other. I like to engage and think every day is a new opportunity to learn.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
People – I’ve learned that each day presents a different challenge. I didn’t know a thing about this business walking in the door, but I’ve learned that it’s the people that make it special and unique, and that fuels my passion. Operations is a playbook for how you run a successful business. It’s the “law and order” of our organization. You cannot get results on the playbook if you do not have the people to run the plays. And the means to measure how well our people do comes in many forms – sometimes the challenge of completing a large cycle in one day, to cheering on a coworker to set records. We try and make each day count and celebrate our successes together.
